What are Group 1 metals called?
Alkali metals
1 of 6
Why are they called alkali metals?
They react with water to produce hydrogen gas and alkaline solutions (hydroxides).
2 of 6
Give 2 properties of Group 1 metals
They have a low density. They react with non metals to form ionic compounds
3 of 6
Why do Lithium, Sodium and Potassium float on water?
They have a low density; they are less dense than water
4 of 6
As you do down the Group what increases and what decreases?
The reactivity of the elements increases. The melting and boiling points decrease.
5 of 6
Why are Rubidium, Cesium and Francium not safe to experiment with in schools?
They are too reactive and highly explosive.
