Group 1 Elements - Alkali Metals

?
Describe the properties of alkali metals.
Alkali metals are very reactive, soft and can be cut with a knife, they have a shiny surface which goes dull when the metal reacts with oxygen to form a layer of oxide and they have low densities, they also have one electron in their outer shell.
1 of 5
List the all the group 1 elements and their order in the reactivity series.
Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Caesium and Francium, in that order.
2 of 5
Describe the reactions with water of the first three alkali metals.
The metal floats and is propelled along. It also fizzes, this is because hydrogen gas is formed during the reaction. With potassium the reaction is so vigorous the hydrogen catches fire and burns with a lilac flame.
3 of 5
What is the name given to the second product of a reaction with water? Also name the reaction of sodium and water.
When an alkali metal reacts with water it produces a hydroxide, sodium + water -> sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
4 of 5
Name four non-metals with which the group 1 element react vigorously and name the products and the appearance and solubility of these products.
Flourine > flouride, chlorine > chloride, bromine > bromide, iodine > to iodide. All white solids and readily soluble in water
