describe the thinking aloud method
participants randomly allocated either to thinking aloud or non-thinking aloud. thinking aloud participants were given a lapel micophone and asked to verbalise every thought that came into their heads. they were asked to speak continuously

describe the self report
after the experiment the participants were asked to complete a questionaire.

1) is there any skill in fruit machine gambling? 2) how skillful are you compared to the average person? 3) what skill is required?

what were the three hypothesis?
1) is there any difference between regular gamblers and non-regular gamblers 2) RGs will produce more irrational verbalisations than NRGs, 3) perception of skill

what were the results for "is there any difference between NRGs and RGs?"
regular gamblers had a higher play rate, RGs who thought aloud had a lower win rate, on the whole there was no significant difference between RGs and NRGs

RGs did produce more irrational verbalisations (14% more)

what were the results for the self report of perception of skill?
RGs thought more skill was involved in gambling and more likely to think of themselves as skilled.

RGs do not behave differently from NRGs, but they do think differently and were more skill orientated
