why did the Greeks have new ideas about medicine and disease?
the Greek empire was very rich, trade helped discover new things, great thinkers such as hippocrates and new crafting led to new theroys of disease.

an alscapion was a temple connected to buildings which was where greeks went to be cured from illnesses. by the god asclepius and his daughters panacea and hygeia.

people put offerings on an alter. the preist would then tell people to go to sleep, in the patients sleep the god and his daughters would visit the sick and heal them.

why did the greeks develop the theory of the 4 humours?
the theory of the 4 humors came from the Egyptian theory of channels, however the greeks theory linked in with the 4 elements and the seasons. the seasons then gave the docters an idea of what treatments to give the sick.

what was the 4 humours?
the 4 humours were liquids in the body that responded to the diferent seasons for example if it was winter this would link with the element ice and ice was cold so the humour that became unbalanced would be phlegm.

how did Greek doctors prevent and treat illness?
doctors observed and recorded symptoms, they treated the 4 humors and tried to balance them by bleeding, purging etc, they gave the patient advivce e.g. to stay fit, surgery was developing e.g setting bones and amputatng

hippocrates was a Greek thinker who gave many theories.

Hippocratic oath, the oath is what doctors still use today it makes clear that doctors are not treating people for money but for the health of the patient

books. he worte lots of books detailing his theories and others theories, it is known as the Hippocratic collection

what did Hippocrates do (part 3)
hippocrates showed how important it was to observe and record carefully the symptoms of a developing illness. this made doctors more likely to choose the right cure and diagnose patients in the future.

what did hippocrates do (part 4)
hippocrates developed the theory of the 4 humours to explain the cause of disease. hippocrates encouraged people to look for natural treatments rather than the gods.
