Explain the stages of the paper making process
1/ Trees are cut down 2/ trees are debarked 3/logs are chipped up 4/ wood chips are washed and additives(chemicals) and bleach are added

paper making continoued
5/ the wire mesh drains the wood pulp and the mesh is placed on a fourdrinier machine which vibrates to forces liquid out 6/ the pulp is squeezed on the rollers 7/ the paper is the wound onto reels so that they can be cut into smaller sheets

Name some advantages of mechanical pulp
Ground to 1-2 mm which softens lignins--- mainly used for newspapaers--- cheaper to produce--- can be bleached
8 of 29
Name some disadvantages of mechanical pulp
lower paper strength--- paper can yellow when exposed to light
9 of 29
Advantages of chemical pulp
Higher paper quality--- waste lignin can be burnt as a fuel or oil substitute, giving energy to national grid
10 of 29
Disadvantages of chemical pulp
It is not produced in the UK and therefore has to be imported
11 of 29
Advantages of waste pulp
It makes use of recycled paper--- it is well suited for bulk grades (newspapers etc...)
12 of 29
Disadvantages of waste pulp
It cannot be indefinately recycled as the pulp loses quality--- and it requires more additives to improve quality.

Name 5 types of paper
1/ drawing 2/ layout 3/ tracing 4/ copier 5/ cartridge 6/ bond 7/ coated 8/ recycled
14 of 29
What is mounting board used for?
For displays, can be done flat or in frames and is of high quality
15 of 29
What is drawing paper used for?
To draw
16 of 29
What is layout paper used for?
used for sketches as it is translucent ( also tracing but in colour)
17 of 29
What is tracing paper used for?
Heavier in weight and transparent --- used to trace but not in colour
18 of 29
What is copier paper used for?
for photocopying as it has a smooth finish and is available in a range of colours
19 of 29
What is cartridge paper used for?
It is used for sketching and has a textured surface
20 of 29
What is bond paper used for?
Used for letter heads used in graphic work... strong paper which is durable and is high in quality
21 of 29
What is coated paper used for?
used for print jobs and have a smooth surface finish (e.g photo paper)
22 of 29
What is recycled paper used for?
used for low quality prints due to the low quality and rougher texture
23 of 29
Name the five main types of board
1/ cartonboard 2/ folding boxboard 3/ corrugated board 4/ solid white board 5/ foil lined board
24 of 29
What is cartonboard used for?
Structural packaging nets as it has excellent print quality and gives great protection and is cheap and can be recyled
25 of 29
What is Folding boxboard used for?
widely used for food packaging and is excellent for scoring and bending without splitting
26 of 29
What is corrugated board used for?
protective packaging and it is cheap (it has a liner- fluted centre- liner)
27 of 29
What is Solid white board used for?
For packaging frozen foods
28 of 29
What is foil lined board used for?
It is used for cosmetic cartons, prepacked food packages. t has a very strong visual impact and is an excellent barrier against moisture.
