Insider group
A pressure group close to the government and has regular contact with decision makers. An example of an insider group is the National Farmers Union

Outsider group
A pressure group with little or no contact with decision makers, this is often due to the fact that they have conflicting ideas. An example of an outsider group is the anti- globalisation group.

Promotional
Promote Ideas that are not directly related to the interest of the members but of the greater good. Sometimes known as cause groups.

Pluralism
A system of government that allows and encourages public participation, particularly through the activities of pressure groups to influence government.

Sectional/Interest
Act on behalf of a particular part of society, they are also known as interest groups because they protect the interests of a section of society.

Parliamentary commissioner for standards
Scrutinises the conduct and interests of MP's and supervisors the compilation an maintenance of the Register of Member's interests. He is independent and acts on any complaint made to him.

Sleaze
This term describes behaviour that brings a political party or the House of Commons into disrepute.

Lobbyist
Paid individuals who seek to influence MPs and Ministers to make particular decisions. They put the point across themselves, they sometimes use payments to organise meetings with the ministers or to do work in parliament for their client.

Populist movement
Groups that are concerned with a single issue which has captured the minds of the public.
