What is Supplmentary vote?
Electors have two vots; first and a second preference. Winning candidate must gain minimum of 50% of the votes.

Advantages of Supplementary vote?
Less safe seats, less wasted votes, simpler than AV so easier for voters.

Disadvantages of Supplementary vote?
Not very proportional, smaller parties dont benefit, higher likelihood of coallitions.

What is FPTP?
A party needs 326 votes to have a majority government, each party returns up to one MP per constitency, voters have one vote

Advantages of FPTP?
Simple system, strong MP constituemcy link, favours a single party government.

Disadvantages of FPTP?
Disproportionate representation, wasted votes and safe seats, harder for minorities to get in.

What is AMS?
Hybrid system, 2/3 FPTP and 1/3 Regional List. Two votes, one for a constituency and one for a region with a choice of party lists.

Advantages of AMS?
Benefits smaller parties due to regional list being more proportional, bigger turnout due to hybrid system

Disadvantages of AMS?
Wasted votes through FPTP, tactical voting can still be done, complex system so is difficult for the electorate to understand

What is STV?
Voters number candidates in order of preference and can number as many or few as they like. A candidate must achieve the 'Droop quota' to be elected. This is used in Northern Ireland for elections to the NI Assembly and European Parliament.

Advantages of STV?
Delivers proportional outcomes, Voters have wide choice of candidates, including ones from the same party

Disadvantages of STV?
Likely to produce coalitions, Less accurate in translating votes proportionally than AMS or list systems
