What is globalisation?
the increasing interconnectedness of societies, so that what happens in one locality is shaped by distant events and vise versa

Why does globalisation create 'risk consciousness' with relation to crime?
Risk is seen as global rathr than tied to particular places. e.g. the increased movement of people has given rise to anxieties among people in western countries about risks of crime and disorder and the need to protect their borders

How does the media help to perpetuate such risks/risk consciousness?
They give an exaggerated view of the dangers we face. In the case of immigration media create moral panics about the supposed threat. Negative coverage of immigrants has lead to hate crimes against minorities in several countires

What have countries done to protect themselves from perceived risks?
The UK has toughened its border control regulations e.g by fining airlines if they bring in undocumented passengers.

How had globalisation allowed crime to develop in the higher classes?
It has allowed transnational corporations to switch manufacturing to low-wage countries. Deregulation has meant that governments have little control over their own economies e.g to raise taxes or create jobs

What has Marketisation encouraged?
encouraged people to see themselves as individual consumers, calculating the personal costs and benefits of each action, undermining the social cohesion

How has globalisation allowed crime to develop in the lower classes?
Lack of legitimate job opportunities destroys self-respect and drives the unemployed to look for illegitimate ones e.g. in the drugs trade

How has globalisation created criminal opportunties for elite groups?
Deregulation of the financial markets has created opportunities for insider trading and tax evasion.
