Geograpy case studies + definitions unit 2

?
Destructive -backwash stronger than swash, carrys sand+pebble away from shore, break frequently, high in prop to length + found steep beaches.
Constructive-swash more power than backwash so deposits sediment on beaches, break infreq long in rel.to height + generally found on gently sloping beaches.
1 of 8
Hydraulic action
Pressure of water being thrown against cliffs by wave, includes compression of air in cracks causing bits to break off.
2 of 8
Corrasion
Sand and pebbles carried within waves are thrown against cliff face with considerable force causing bits of rock to break off.
3 of 8
Corrosion
chemical reaction between certain rock types and the salt and other acids in ocean. Particularly evident on limestone +chalk cliffs
4 of 8
Attrition
Involves wearing away of rocks in the sea. As boulders in sea continually roll around they chip at eachother unitl smooth pebbles and sand are formed.
5 of 8
Physical weathering
Freeze thaw weathering or frost action when water gets in cracks of rocks, when temp falls below freezing water expands putting pressure on surrounding rock causing fragments to break off
6 of 8
Chemical weathering
rainwater contains weak acids that react with certain rock types. Carbonates in limestone dissolved by these weak acids causing rock to break up and disintegrate.
7 of 8
Biological weathering
Plants + animals on land. Seeds fall into rock cracks + grow causing rock to break. Burrowing animals can also break up rocks
