Geography unit 2 a watery world

?
Domestic usage of water
HICs use water for a wide range of domestic practices- baths, washing machines, toilets, swimming etc. LICs, people can walk km to get to nearest water sources so use water sparingly.
1 of 8
Agricultural usage of water
HICs use irrigation systems using ups lots of water e.g spray irrigations can operate at 75 litres of water a second, in China, the hand worked bucket can produce 2 litres of water per second.
2 of 8
Industrial usage
Industry in HICs is mostly large scale with factories that use millions of litre of water in the production of items. In India, Coca cola uses 1 million litres of water per day. In LICs often small scale that use v.little or no water.
3 of 8
Groundwater - in some places water soaks into the ground and settles in large area of porous rock such as chalk or limestone. These fill up with water and are called aquifers. The highest level of water in the aquifer is called the water table.
To extract water from an aquifer a hole is drilled below the water table and pressure will cause the water to flow up the pipe to the surface. Mexico city built on an aquifer, being drained quicker than it can be replenished so causing areas to sink.
4 of 8
Reservoir - an artificial lake of water held behind a dam to store water for irrigation, drinking, recreation, power etc. Two main types - direct supply and river regulating
direct supply -store water and supply straight to treatment works. River regulating - store water during wet periods so in dry spells river can be topped up
5 of 8
Kielder water - river regulating reservoir owned by Northumbrian Water + holds 200 billion litres -largest reservoir in the UK. It releases water into the North Tyne river which joins the Tyne near Hexham
The water can also be pumped to 3 of the regions other rivers - Derwent, Wear and Tees.
6 of 8
Water surplus - More water available than is required.
Water deficit - less water is available than is required
7 of 8
Physical water scarcity - water usage is unsustainable, there is less water than required.
Economic water scarcity - water resources are abundant but too expensive to extract.
