What is a drainage basin?
An area of land that is drained by one river.

What is infiltration?
The soaking of water through the soil. this will happen quickly at first but will slow down as the soil becomes saturated.

What is ground water storage?
Amounts of water that are stored underground.

What is transpiration?
The process of water evaporating from the leaves, stems and flowers of plants.

What is surface storage?
Water being stored on the surface e.g. in a lake or tarn.

What is through flow?
The movement of water through the soil to a river or stream. It is particularly effective therefore the water cannot soak any further down.

What is sruface run off?
Water flowing over a surface towards a channel.

What is evapotranspiration?
The combined process of evaporation and transpiration.

What is impermeable?
Rocks that don't let water flow through.

Rocks that let water pass through them.

A rock that can store water.

A shortage of something.

The act of using something.

What is field capacity?
The maximum amount of water that a particular soil can hold.

What is percolation?
Water filtering through permeable rocks. The rate at which this happens depends on the nature of the rock. Some rocks are impermeable and so do not let water pass through them.
