Tectonic Plate
a huge section of the Earth’s crust
1 of 19
There are TWO main types of plates:
Continental Plate: (e.g. Eurasian Plate)- thick and less dense than Oceanic plates, Mostly made of Granite; Oceanic plates- Thinner and more dense than continental plates, Mostly made of Basalt, falt and are situated under large bodies of water
2 of 19
What causes Tectonic Movement?
It is caused by Covention currents
3 of 19
Plate Boundary
The points which the plate meet is known as a Plate Boundary
4 of 19
Fold Mountain
Upland areas formed by the Buckling of the Earth's crust. they are found on Destructive plate margins
5 of 19
Formation of fold mountains
When tectonic plates collide, the sedimentary rocks that have built up between them are folded; They are then forced upwards to form fold mountains
6 of 19
Characteristics of Fold Mountains
They have very high Mountains with steep slopes, At the highest/coldest point, there is ually lots of snow and many glaciers are formed by erosion
7 of 19
How are Alps used?
Farming, Hydro-Electric Power, Mining, Forestry and Tourism
8 of 19
How have people living in the Alps adapted to the conditions
Steep Relief- Trees and man made defences are used to protect against avalanches and landslides
9 of 19
Volcanoe
A cone shaped mountaion created ny lava fgrom repeated eruptions
10 of 19
Three types of Volcanoes
Compsotite Volcanoes (Cone Volvanoes), Sheild Volcanoes and Super Volcanoes.
11 of 19
Characteristics of a Composite Volacanoe
They have steep sided symmetrical cone shope, High with a narrow base, Alternate layers of acid and ash, Eruptions are less frequent.
12 of 19
Characteristics of a Shield Volcanoe
The have a wide base with gentle slopes, Made up of hardened Lava, The lava is more runny and flows thicker = spreading and quickly covering a wide area forming a low flat volcanoe, Frequent and non-violent eruptions.
13 of 19
Characteristics of a Super volcanoe
Covers a larger area than volcanoes (Yellowstone: 50km wide), Super volcanoes are much bigger but much flatter than Volcanoes, they do not have a crater but instead they have a Caldera, Ash from Super Volcanoes will settle over hundreds of square km
14 of 19
Formation of Super volcanoes at hotspots
Magma rises through the crust, creating a magma basin below the surface. Thhis causes a buldge on the surface which eventally cracks and lava erupts through vents. As the magma basin empties the bulge is no longer surpported and it collapses.
15 of 19
Focus
The intrusive point where the Earthquakes start
16 of 19
Epicentre
The extrensive point (on surface) where the earthquake starts
17 of 19
Shockwaves
Vibrations emitted from tectonic collisions
18 of 19
How are Earthquake measured
By using the Richter Scale which measures the amount of energy released ny an earthquake
