Plate Tectonics
the study of the movement of plate boundaries - earthquakes and volacanoes
1 of 20
Oceanic Crust
The part of the earth's crust which is under the oceans;it's made of basalt and is between %km and 10km thick
2 of 20
Magma
Melted rock below the earths surface . When it reaches the surface , it is called lava
3 of 20
Core
The central part of the the earth, consisting of a solid inner core and a more fluid outer core, mostly composed of nickle and iron
4 of 20
Asthenosphere
Part of the earths' mantle. It is hot, semi molten layer that lies beneath the tectonic plates. It is between 20 and 70 km thick
5 of 20
Volcano
landform created as a result of the eruption of molten rock , ash and gases from the an opening in the Earth's surface.

Radioactive Decay
Some elements are naturally unstable and radioactive. Atoms of these elements release particles from their nuclei and give off heat. This is known as radioactive decay
7 of 20
Lithosphere
the uppermost layer of the earth. It is cools and brittle. It includes the very top of the mantle and above this , the crust
8 of 20
Convection Currents
These transfer heat from one part of a liquid or gas to another
9 of 20
Earthquake
the violent shaking of the earth's crust as a result of the movement of the earth's plates
10 of 20
Mantle
The middle layer of the earth. It lies between the crust and the core and is 2900km thick, Its outer layer is the asthenosphere
11 of 20
Geothermal
Heat which is generated from within the earth
12 of 20
Continental Crust
The part of the earth's crust that makes the continents; it 's made of granite between 25km and 100 km thick
13 of 20
Subduction
The oceanic plate is dragged downwards to the sea bed since it is more denser
14 of 20
Epicentre
Is the point on the Earth's surface above the focus and the first place to shake.
15 of 20
Mitigation
Minimizing the effects of disaster. Example include: building codes and zoning; vulnerability analyses;public education.
16 of 20
Preparedness
Planning how tot respond. examples: preparedness plans; emergency exercises/training;warning systems
17 of 20
Response
efforts to minimize the hazards created by a disaster. Examples; search and rescue;emergency relief
