Coastal Weathering
Weathering is the breakdown of rocks where they are.

Erosion
Erosion is when the rocks are broken down and carried away by something. eg; by sea water.

Mechanical weathering
The breakdown of rock without changing its chemical composition. There's on main type of mechanical weathering that affects coasts - freeze-thaw weathering.

Freeze-thaw.
1) It happens when the temperature alternates above and below 0 degrees.

Freeze-thaw.
2) Water gets into the rock that has cracks. eg; granite

Freeze-thaw.
3) When the water freezes it expands, which puts pressure on the rock.

Freeze-thaw.
4) When the water thaws it contracts, which releases the pressure on the rock.

Freeze-thaw.
Repeated freezing and thawing widens the cracks and causes the rock to break up.
