Geography Coastal Change and Conflict 3

?
Where is the Holderness Coastline, why is it significant?
1)Yorkshire, East Coast of England 2) It is made up of Boulder clay 3) One of Europe's fastest eroding coastlines.
1 of 10
What was built on the Holdreness coastline, where? What does this do?
1)A large rock sea groyne 2)At Mappleton, as the rate of erosion was extremely higgh here 3) The two rock groynes at Mappleton have helped develop wide and steep sandy beaches
2 of 10
Does this approach cause other problems?
However, further south the rate of erosion has increased significantly. This is because material which is being carried south is not being replaced (it is trapped within the groynes). Therefore there is no beach to protect the cliffs

Explain what holistic management means?
A holistic approach means to consider and meet the needs of many aspects. ( to manage a whole stretch of coast, not just one part.) environmental, social and economical benefits.
4 of 10
What is 'Hold the line' and what are the benefits/problems?
Use sea defences to move the coast in the same place. This is very expensive.
5 of 10
What is 'advance the line' and what are the benefits and problems?
Use sea defences t move the ocast further into the sea. This is very expensive. The defenses must be maintained. Erosion can occur in other areas of the coast if a holistic approach is not taken.
6 of 10
What is 'strateigic retreat' and what are the benefits/problems
Gradually let the coast erode, and move people away from the area. Homes/businesses/farmland is lost> lack of income>spiral of decline. Compensation can be costly.
7 of 10
What are the benefits/problems of doing nothing?
People lose homes/jobs/land. Compensation can be expensive.
8 of 10
soft engineering
Smaller structures, usually made up of natural materials, which reduce the energy of the waves.
9 of 10
Hard engineering
Concrete/steel structures. Large defences which stop waves from reaching something.
