Cause:- Movement along a crack in the plate at a destructive margin.

Preperation:-
*No local disaster planning in place. * Buildings were not designed to be earthquake resistance. *Communications were poor,there were few roads and they were poorly constructed.

Primary Effects:-
Around 80,000 deaths, mostly from collapsed buildings.*Hundreds of thousands of people injured.*Entire villages and thousands of being were destroyed.*3 million made homeless*water pipelines and electricity lines broken meaning no supply.

Secondary Effects:-
*Landslides buried buildings and people. They blocked roads and cut off water supplies,electric and telphone lines.

Immediate Responses:-
*Help didnt reach many areas for days and weeks.*People were rescued by hand.*Tents,Blankets and medical supplies were distributed but did not reach everyone.*International aid and equipment, from other countries were sent out.

Long Term Response:-
Around 40,000 people have been relocated to a new home.*Govenment money has been givin to those who couldn't rebuild.*New Health centres.*New buildings are earthquake resistant.
