Geography Case Studies - Coasts

?
Case Study for an Eroding Coastline?
Mappleton, Holderness coast, East Yorkshire
1 of 12
Describe the issues with erosion on the coast
Holderness made of boulder clay, sub-aerial weathering saturates the clay weakening it. Abrasion and hydraulic action hit base of cliff, leading to slumping
2 of 12
How did the town Mappleton respond to coastal erosion?
In 1991, Mappleton spent 1.9 mil pounds - rock groyne. Was cheaper to protect village to save B1242 than to rebuild the road
3 of 12
How did this affect erosion?
The groyne stopped LSD. However, this affected 2 farms south of Mappleton
4 of 12
Describe one of the farm's issues with coastal erosion
Great Cowden farm, owned by David & Sue Earle, would normally lose 1m of cliff a year to erosion. After 1991, it increased to 10m. They were ordered to leave and demolish their property. They received no compensation
5 of 12
Describe the other farm's issues with coastal erosion
Shawn and Yvonne Mars owned Cliff House Farm, bought just before the 1991 groyne, and their farm started to lose much land in increased erosion. Lost cattle, farming business, received no insurance, and no compensation

Case Study rising sea levels and coastal flooding?
Maldives
7 of 12

Global warming causing Ice Caps/Glaciers to melt, heated oceans expand, leading to sea levels rising by 2mm a year.
8 of 12
What are the Economic effects?
loss of tourism, the largest industry. Main airport could flood. Fish are largest export, flooding may damage processing plant, reducing export sales.
9 of 12
What are the Social effects?
Houses lost to flooding. Water contaminated, means will have to build expensive desalination plants
10 of 12
What are the Environmental effects?
Beaches and coastal habitats lost. Thin soil washed away in floods means no farming
11 of 12
What are the Political effects?
Japanese Gov gave $60 mil to build 3m high wall to protect Male. Gov buying land in India and Australia so that they can move there when island lost. Maldvies gov has pledged become Carbon Neutral to help slow global warming and wants other gov's to
