Geography- Battle for the biosphere

?
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is interaction between the living and the non living in an environment.
1 of 25
What is a Biome?
A Biome is a large scale ecosystem
2 of 25
Name 4 LOCAL factors that can affect a biome.
Altitude, Proximity to water, Geology and Humans
3 of 25
Name 4 General factors that can affect a biome.
Sunlight, temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours.
4 of 25
State how altitude affects a Biome.
atmosphere is thinner the higher the altitude, temperature 1'C for every 100 mtrs of altitude.
5 of 25
State how humans affect a Biome.
Path erosion in countryside limit local native plant growth, increasing number of factories reduces preservment of countryside, CO2+SO2=Pollution=Climate Change, Deforestation from logging and cattle damaging.
6 of 25
State how proximity to water affects a Biome.
Continental places far inland have greater temperature extremes.
7 of 25
State how geology affects a Biome.
Porous/Permeable rocks (e.g limestones) create dry conditions, Impermeable rocks (e.g clays) trap water allowing tree growth, Area poorly drained have limited plant growth.
8 of 25
State how sunlight affects a Biome.
photosynthesis-> lack of at poles= little vegetation growth, more of at equator= more vegetation growth
9 of 25
State how precipitation affects a Biome.
more likely in some places than others, low pressure= more rainfall, high pressure= rainfall less common, inbetween pressures= wet and dry seasons e.g the Savanna
10 of 25
State how sunshine hours affect a Biome.
Slopes that face sun= warmer than those that face away. Longer the sunshine hour the more photosynthesis. Too much sunshine= desert like no vegetation.

Give two examples of Global conservation groups.
R.A.M.S.A.R and C.I.T.E.S
12 of 25
What is RAMSAR, when was it signed and how many countries have adopted it?
1) convention of conserving wetlands, 2) signed in 1971, 3) adopted by 147 countries
13 of 25
What is CITES, when was it signed and how many countries have adopted it?
1)Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, 2)Signed in 1973, 3) adopted by 166 countries
14 of 25
What is the negative of the CITES organisation? and the positive of the CITES organisation?
Negative: Difficult to manage due to many conflicting interests. Positive: Provides a useful legal framework for conservation.
15 of 25
Give an example of a Local conservation group. When was it created?
B.A.P.S, 1992
16 of 25
What is B.A.P's and what are its aims?
1) Biodiversity action plans 2)protect British natural vegetation
17 of 25
Give an example of a National conservation group/plan. (1)
National parks, set up by governments to preserve and manage bio diversity.
18 of 25
Give an example of a National conservation group/plan. (2)
Community forests, established to provide new areas of trees near major cities.
19 of 25
Explain what is meant by the term 'Sustainable Management'.
Meeting the needs of the people now, without compromising the future, whilst limiting harm to the environment.
20 of 25
Give an example of a 'sustainable forest'.
Costa Rica, conserved via the creation of national parks. Local population reply on forests for much needed tourism, the locals offer tours around rainforest so they can make a living without deforestation.
21 of 25
Give an example of a Biome destroyed as a result of deforestation.
Kalimantan, Indonesia, Borneo. Home to some of the oldest tropical rainforests in the world, over time large parts were destroyed via deforestation= soil erosion+crop failure = land unusable
22 of 25
What is the main threat to the Amazon rain forest and what is the biggest cause of it?
Deforestation= Cattle ranching causes 60% of deforestation in the amazon.
23 of 25
Why is the Amazon Rain Forest important?
It provides us with lots of things, e.g: paper, wood, mahogany for rich, jewelry, food etc
24 of 25
What other factors cause the threats to the biosphere?
Logging, Biofuels, Agriculture, HEP, Road building, Mining for minerals.
