Crust
This is the outer layer of the earth where you find the continents and aceans on it. it is soild and a very thin layer and ranges thickness between 6-70km. it broken into 14 large plates.
1 of 9
Outercore
This layer is liquid and made largely of iron and nickle. It is very hot. This is the layer responsible for the earths magnetic field.
2 of 9
Mantel
This is the thickest layer of the earth. It has a very high temperature and has a consistency of jam. Near the core the temp is 5000 C and below crust is 1500 C It is semi molten rock and moves slowly due to heat coming from the core
3 of 9
Destructive (Does not fit)
Oceanic and Continental plate collide. Oceanic plate is denser so it sinks beneath the Continental plate forming an ocean trench and subduction one. Friction and heat melts the oceanic plate which becomes molten magma. cont...
4 of 9
Collision
Two contential plates collide. Equal density; neither plate sinks. Rock is compressed and forced upwards to form high fold mountains.
5 of 9
Constructive
Plates moves apart. Molten rock (magma) rises to the earth to fill the gap. Cools and forms new oceanic crust. Forms mid-oceanic ridges and volcanoes on ocean floor. If forms high enough it can form a island
6 of 9
Conservative
Plates moves past each other, in similar or opposite directions. No crust is created or destroyed.Pressure builds up over time and realised to a sudden jerk.Violent shock waves are released causing earthquakes.
7 of 9
Richter scale
The power of an earthquake is measured using a seismometer. A sesimometer detects the vibrations caused by an earthquake. It plots these vibrations on seismograph. The strength or magnitude of an earthquake is measure using the Richter scale (0-10)
8 of 9
Mercali scale
Measures the damage caused by an earthquake. It rates earthquakes from 1-12. its used to indicate the intensity (magnitude) of an earthquake. it takes into effects of an earthquake and earth surface. Its obtained by making judgments (no machine)
