Protection
Concrete shelters protect against volcanic ash.Evacuation routes are clearly sign posted; people have regular evacuation drills.Concrete lahar channels divert dangerous mudflows.
1 of 8
Prediction
Hot springs are monitored.Boreholes measure hot water temperature as magma heats it up.Aircrafts are used to measure the amount of gas the volcano gives off.Tiltmeters detect when the volcano swells up as it fills with magma.
2 of 8
More Prediction
A tunnel in the volcano has seismometers. These monitor earthquakes which increases as magma rises so scientists can predict an eruption.
3 of 8
Describe one method that can be used to predict when a volcano is likely to erupt. (2)
Aircrafts can monitor how much gas the volcano gives off. This can predict an eruption.
4 of 8
Describe one action that can be taken to reduce the impact of earthquakes. (2)
Make sure every country have regular drills so that people know what to do in an earthquake.
5 of 8
Explain why some earthquakes are more hazardous than others. (4)
There is a richter scale which indicates how hazardous the earthquake is. In the developing world, the emergency services are poorly equipped which means more people die and get injured.
6 of 8
Effects of a volcanic eruption.
The ash from the eruption damaged buildings and even made some collapse.Lots of people had to evacuate their homes. The fine ash also slit up rivers which meant harbours had to close and this also made the bridges in danger of being damaged.
7 of 8
Other effects of a volcanic eruption.
As buildings collapsed, many businesses went bankrupt and were forced to close. This made people unemployed. Additionally, as people had to evacuate their homes, people were left homeless. There was a shortage of food as transport was disrupted.
