1.What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem includes all the living and non-living parts in an area
1 of 27
2.Give two abiotic features of ecosystems.
Soil and climate
2 of 27
3.What is a producer?
An organism that uses sunlight energy to produce food
3 of 27
4.Describe the role of decomposers in ecosystems.
Breaks down dead material e.g. bacteria
4 of 27
5.Where are temperate deciduous forests found?
Found mainly in the mid latitudes where there are four distinct seasons
5 of 27
6.what type of ecosystem is nearly always found between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn?
Tropical Rainforest
6 of 27
7.Describe the climate of tropical rainforests.
Hot (generally between 20-28 degrees), rainfall is high (around 2000mm per year)
7 of 27
8.Give an example of an interdependent relationship in the tropical rainforest ecosystem.
Plants pass on their nutrients when they're eaten by animals. The dense vegetation provides lots of food, so animal populations are high.
8 of 27
9.Describe three ways that plants are adapted to living in tropical rainforests.
Trees have buttress roots to support their trunks, drip-tip leaves so the weight of the water doesn't damage the plant, climbing plants like lianas use tall trees to climb up to get sunlight
9 of 27
10.What is biodiversity?
The variety of organisms living in a particular area
10 of 27
11.Give six causes of deforestation in tropical rainforests.
Population pressure, mineral extraction, energy development, commercial logging, commercial farming, subsistence farming
11 of 27
12a.Give an example of a tropical rainforest.
The Amazon Rainforest
12 of 27
12b.Describe the environmental impacts of deforestation in that area.
Global warming, loss of topsoil every year because of soil erosion caused by soy farming
13 of 27
13.Why is it important to protect tropical rainforests?
To preserve it's biodiversity
14 of 27
14.What is selective logging?
Only the older trees are felled, so the overall forest structure is kept, meaning that the forest will be able to regenerate so it can be used in the future
15 of 27
15.What is ecotourism?
Tourism that minimises damage to the environment and benefits the local people
16 of 27
16.How do international hardwood agreements help in the sustainable management of rainforests?
Reduce illegal logging and promote hardwood from sustainably managed forests
17 of 27
17.Explain how reducing debt can be used in the sustainable management of rainforests.
A conservation swap, where part of the country's debt is paid off in exchange for a guarantee that the money is spent on conservation
18 of 27
18.Describe the climate in hot deserts.
Very little rainfall, temperatures are extreme
19 of 27
19.What is the soil like in hot deserts?
Shallow with a coarse, gravelly texture, not very fertile, dry
20 of 27
20.Describe two ways that people cope with the lack of water in hot deserts
Constantly moving to new places, digging up deep wells
21 of 27
21.Give two adaptations of plants to hot deserts.
Large fleshy stems for storing water, long roots to reach very deep water supplies
22 of 27
22.Give two adaptations to animals to hot deserts.
Being nocturnal means that animals can stay cool, some bigger animals store large amounts of fat which they can break down into water when needed
23 of 27
23.Describe one issue related to biodiversity in hot deserts.
Human development is increasing desertification, which means that species that are already at the limits of their environment don't have anywhere else to go, so are at risk of decline or extinction
24 of 27
24.Describe how inaccessibility can make development challenging in hot desert environments.
Deserts are huge so people have to travel far, making it difficult to provide services in remote regions
25 of 27
25.Explain how tree planting can reduce the risk of desertification.
It will protect the soil from wind erosion and smaller crops by providing shade, which reduces temperatures and evaporation rates, it will also stabilise the sand to prevent the desert from encroaching on farm land
26 of 27
26.Give one strategy, other than tree planting, that can reduce the risk of desertification.
Soil management-leaving areas of land to rest in between caring or planting lets them recover their nutrients
