What are polar climates?
Winters are cold, cold because of the high latitudes, summers are short with many hours of light, coldest glacial regions support no life, less than 300mm of precipitation
1 of 17
What are hot arid climates?
Hot temperatures, occasional rainfall that causes flash flooding, hottest environments supports little life, cold night, very few clouds, less 250mm of rain
2 of 17
How have flora and fauna adapted to polar environments?
Support very little other life, some hardy plants grow close to the ground to survive the strong winds, many animals can live in tundra conditions, thick layers of fat and/or fur, coloured white to camo, boggy conditions
3 of 17
How have flora and fauna adapted to hot arid environments?
Animals store water in fat, insects collect moisture from air, large ears to dissipate heat, plants store water, seeds can stay dormant, produce bright coloured flowers to attract insects after rainfall
4 of 17
What can climate change in polar environments lead to?
Burst lakes in glacial regions build-up of melt water, lakes can burst and flood water destroys ecosystems, solifluction, large areas of soil melt, move like a landslide, destroying vegetation in its paths
5 of 17
What can climate change in hot arid environments lead to?
Extreme drought, even the specially adapted flora and fauna cant survive, desertification, animals and plants that live in what used to be semi-arid areas cannot adapt and they did
6 of 17
How people adapt to polar environments?
Triple glazing windows, wearing fur/layers, use geothermal power, houses raised up above ground, hunting rather than growing crops, roads built on gravel to prevent them cracking, steep roofs so snow falls off
7 of 17
How people adapt to hot arid environments?
Walls on buildings painted white to reflect heat, thick walls and small windows, air conditioning in homes, loose fitting clothes, head coverings, flat roofs, irrigation used to grow crops, nomadic farming
8 of 17
How does pollution impact a polar region (Alaska)?
Oil spills, (Exxon Valdez) have caused environmental catastrophes in Alaska in the past
9 of 17
How does pollution impact a hot region (Sahel)?
Air pollution from newly emerging economies and industrialised countries may increase drought
10 of 17
How does land degradation impact a polar region (Alaska)?
Permafrost melting due to buildings heating up land, especially around big urban centres
11 of 17
How does land degradation impact a hot region (Sahel)?
Desertification leads to disappearing vegetation and soil erosion, partly caused by overgrazing livestock
12 of 17
How does cultural dilution impact a polar region (Alaska)?
Loss of native language and cultural traditions - influence of Western cultures is growing
13 of 17
How does cultural dilution impact a hot region (Sahel)?
Traditional rituals performed to entertain tourists, western cultures have a strong influence
14 of 17
How does out-migration impact a polar region (Alaska)?
People, especially the young, are moving away due to lack of social and employment opportunities
15 of 17
How does out-migration impact a hot region (Sahel)?
People, especially the young, are moving away due to lack of social and employment opportunities
16 of 17
What are the effects of climate change in a polar climate?
Warmer summers, changes in sea, glacier retreat, permafrost melting, species migration, sea level rise, coastal flooding, erosion, ecosystem changes
