Geography-restless earth

?
What is the Earth's crust divided up into?
Continental; thick and less dense. Oceanic; thinner and more dense.
1 of 14
Types of plate margins
Destructive; moving towards eachother, oceainc subduts and creates volcanes ocean trenches. Constructive; move apart, knew land formed. Conservative;slide past (different speed/direction) earthquakwes occur.
2 of 14
How are fold mountains formed?
When two continental plates collide sediment is piushed together. E.G. Alps
3 of 14
How are fold mountains used?
Farming, Mining, Hydro electric power, Forestry,Tourism
4 of 14
Fold Mountains CASE STUDY
Alps: FARMING;goats and terraced to plant vineyards. TOURISM; extreme activities and cablescars, chalets, villages built. HEP; more rain and steep releif. MINING; ores available. FORESTRY; pine used for furniture
5 of 14
What problems do the residents of fold mountains face and how have they adapted to it?
STEEP RELEIF;goats well adapeted, trewes protect from avalanches. POOR SOIL; animal grazed instead. LIMITED COMMUNICATIONS; roads, tunnels link different mountains
6 of 14
Where are volcanoes found?
destructive, constructive plates margins and at hotspots
7 of 14
Types of volcanoes and characteristics.
COMPOSITE; layers of ash and lava, steep sides, narrow base, thick lava. SHEILD; lava layers only, gentle slope, wide base, runy lava. DOME; lava l;ayers only , steep slopes, thick lava.
8 of 14
How do you predict earthquakes?
small earthquakes, escaping gas, change of shape, animal behaviour.
9 of 14
How are supervolcanoes formed?
Magma rise creates basin(bulge), cracks /vents form, lava escapes, basin empties and collapses, cratwer left behind.
10 of 14
what are the consequences of a supervolcanoe eruption?
releae; rock, ask, lava (1000s of km), cloudof hot gas burns everthing within 10miles, ash blocks out daylight(mini-iceage)and cover buildings, crops.
11 of 14
How are earthquakes fromed?
friction builds up, tension relesed at focus. Shock waves (vibrations) released touching epicentre. (DEEPER THE FOCUS THE WEAKER THE EARTHQUAKE- ABSORBSED AWAY)
12 of 14
How are earthquakes measured?
RICHTER; measures energy relaead (magnitude),seisometer measures the vibrations. MERCALLI; measures effect of an earthquake, eye witness observations(photos, words)
13 of 14
How is a tsunami formed?
earthquake takes place under water, displaces water which becomes a giant wave.
