NATURAL HAZARD
A natural occurrence over which people have little control, which poses a threat to people’s lives and possessions. This is different from a natural event as volcanoes can erupt in unpopulated areas without being a hazard.

The term given to the geographical conditions that increases the susceptibility of a community to a hazard or to the impact of a hazard event. The hazard risk is increased if the probability of a hazard event causing harmful consequences (loss of life, in

SOCIAL IMPACTS (EFFECTS)
The effect of physical or human events and/or activities on people. For example: effects on people’s health, their lifestyles, homes, community.....(effects on quality of life)... earthquake destroying people’s homes.

ENVIRONMENTAL
IMPACTS (EFFECTS)
The impact of physical or human activities and/or events on our surroundings, including the land, water and air, as well as features of the natural landscapes and built-up areas. For example: The impacts of flood events on natural habitats, water sources

URBANISATION
The growth in the number and size of towns and cities and their resultant populations. It is associated with urban growth and sprawl.

POVERTY
When people are unable to meet their basic needs for food & water, clothing and shelter due to a lack of income.

CLIMATE CHANGE
The long term change in the Earth’s climate, especially a change due to an increase in the average atmospheric temperature

FARMING
(AGRICULTURE)
A primary industry where farmers cultivate crops and rear animals to produce food and other products. There are a range of agricultural operations from large commercial farms to small subsistence farms.
