-fertile soils. -closer to markets. -healthy climate. -river and sea ports providing trade.

DISADVANTAGES of PERIPHERY regions
-poor soils. -distance from core and trade routes. -difficult communications especially by road. -disease, eg, malaria. -climate hazards, eg droughts and floods.

multiplier effect (core)
means that core regions get richer and richer as development occurs.

downward spirals (periphery)
means that periphery regions become poorer as anyone who can leave, does leave.
