Biological weathering
Rabbit burrows: Burrowing which weakens the rock. Tree roots:Roots go into the earth which weakens it
1 of 17
Physical weathering
Sun: Sun heats up the earth and in the night it cools down. Frost: Water gets into cracks it expands which breaks the rock
2 of 17
Chemical weathering
Acid rain: The rain weathers the rock away
3 of 17
Solution
Chemical action on rocks by salt water, the sea water dissolves the rock and the dissolved material is carried away in solution
4 of 17
Abrasion
wears rocks and cliff bases like sand paper
5 of 17
Hydraulic action
Air is forced into cracks in a cliff by waves, pressure from this cause the rock to shatter
6 of 17
Attrition
Rocks, pebbles loose particles as the rocks hit off each other, this makes the rocks smooth
7 of 17
Destructive waves
They are high energy waves which erode a lot of material, it has a strong swash but a stronger backwash
8 of 17
Constructive waves
Very low energy waves, material is slowly moved up the beach
9 of 17
Formation of a wave cut platform
1. Sea attacks the cliff between high and low water mark. 2. A wave cut notch is formed by undercutting leaving an overhang. 3. Over hang falls into sea and is washed away by waves. 4. Cliff face retreats- moves back
10 of 17
Traction
Rolling of the bed load on the sea bed
11 of 17
Saltation
The bed load bounces along the sea bed
12 of 17
Suspension
The bed load floats in the water
13 of 17
Solution
The bed load dissolves in the water
14 of 17
Long-shore drift
The waves go at an angle because of the prevailing wind and it carries material along the coast line loosing more and more material each time. Backwash at 90 degrees due to gravity
15 of 17
Formation of a spit
Long-shore drift carries on to carry material along the coast and prevailing wind causes it to curve at the end.
16 of 17
Formation of a bar
Long-shore drift carries on to join the 2 sides of a bay together to leave a salt marsh behind it
