Geography 1A- Climate Change

?
What is climate change?
Any significant change in the Earth's climate
1 of 24
What is global warming?
The sharp rise in global temperature
2 of 24
How can tree rings be used as evidence for climate change?
Because tree rings are thicker in warm, wet conitions so they can see what climate was like
3 of 24
How can ice and sediment cores be used as evidence for climate change?
They can see the gases trapped in the layers of ice
4 of 24
How can pollen analysis be used as evidence for climate change?
Pollen gets preserved in sediment which can be compared with pollen now
5 of 24
How can temperature records be used as evidence for climate change?
They give a reliable record of temperature change
6 of 24
How do orbital changes cause climate change?
The radiation from the orbits affects the amount of solar energy the earth recieves
7 of 24
How does volcanic activity cause climate change?
Eject large quanties of material into air which reflects suns rays back out, also CO2 released
8 of 24
How does solar output cause climate change?
Period where slar output is reduced causes it to be cooler in some areas
9 of 24
What are some human ways that we cause climate change?
Burning fossil fuels, farming, cement production and deforestation
10 of 24
How does farming cause climate change?
Animals produce methane and rice paddies emit methane
11 of 24
How does cement production cause climate change?
It is made from limestone whcih contains carbon, CO2 released when produced
12 of 24
What effects does climate change have on glaciers?
They shrink whcih makes animals lose homes and causes sea level to rise wheich will then flood low lying areas
13 of 24
What effects does climate change have on other animals?
They are declining and distribution of animals are being found in the wrong areas e.g in higher latitudes
14 of 24
What effects does climate change on areas?
They are becoming dryer and impossible to live in leads to migration in other areas. Also water shortages
15 of 24
What effects does climate change have on farming?
rops have suffered- getting smaller, howwver some benefit from wamer conditions
16 of 24
What effcets does climate change have on weather?
More extreme whcih means more money spent on predicting, reducing and rebuilding
17 of 24
How can we manage climate change? (4 ways)
Carbon capture, planting tress, alternative energy and international agreements
18 of 24
What is carbon capture?
Capturing C02 and tarsnporting it to be stored underground
19 of 24
What is one international agreemet?
The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997
20 of 24
What are the three ways we can adapt to climate change?
Managing water supply, coping with sea rise level and changing agricultural systems
21 of 24
How can we manage water supplies?
Water metres and rainwater can be collected
22 of 24
How can we cope with rising sea levels?
Physical defences- flood barriers and build houses on tp of embankments
23 of 24
How can we cope with changing agricultual systems?
Plant new crop tyupes and use biotechnology to create more crop varieties
