Geograohy revision

?
What is at the centre of the earth?
a ball of solid iron and nickel called the core
1 of 24
Name the parts of the earth in order starting from middle and going outwrads.
Inner core, outer core, mantle , crust
2 of 24
What are destructive plate margins?
When two plates are moving towards eachother, when the oceanic plate meets the continental the oceanic is forced down and destroyed creating ocean trenches and volcanoes
3 of 24
What are constructive plate margins?
When two plates are moving away from eachother, Magma rises from the mantle to fill the gaps and then cools creating new land.
4 of 24
What are conservative margins?
Where two plates are moving sideways past eachother or moving in the same direction just at different speeds.
5 of 24
How are fold mountains formed?
When plates collide at a destructive margin, the sedimentry are forced upwards and crumpled to form fold mountains
6 of 24
Name a fold mountain case study and state what they are used for?
The alps, Farming, Hydro electric power, mining , forestry, tourism
7 of 24
Give some information about the alps?
Located in centeral europe and formed 30 million years ago from the african and eurasian plate colliding
8 of 24
How have people adapted to fold mountain conditions?
Steep relief, Poor soils animals are in higher areas, Limited communications
9 of 24
Where are volcanoes found?
At destructive and constructive plate margins
10 of 24
Name features of a composite volcano?
made up of ash and lava thats cooled into layers, lava is thick and flows slowly and it hardens quickly to form a steep sided volcano
11 of 24
Name features of a sheild volcano?
Made up of only lava, the lava is runny and flows quickly and is spread over a wide area forming a low flat volcano.s
12 of 24
Name a case study of a volcano and give some facts about it.
The soufiere hills volcano in montserrat, erupted in 1997 on June the 25th killing 19
13 of 24
What are primary and secondary impacts?
Primary- everything that happened straight away, as soon as it occured, secondary- Impacts which happened a while after the eruption (NOT IMMEDIATLEY)
14 of 24
What are immediate and long term responses?
Immediate- Responses taken place as the eruption occured or just after Long term= What happened a long time afterwards.
15 of 24
Explain the process of a super volcano eruption?
Magma rises through the cracks to form a large magma basin,The pressure of the magma causes a circular bulge which eventually cracks creating vents for lava to escape through
16 of 24
What will happen when a super volcano erupts?
There will be global consequences, it will throw out thousands of cubic milometers of rocks ash and lava , a thick cloud of ash will block all daylight and there may be a temperature increase
17 of 24
Where do earthquakes occur?
At all three types of plate margins
18 of 24
What happens after the tension builds up to cause the earthquake?
the plates jerk past eachother sending out shockwaves they spread from the focus
19 of 24
What happens if the waves are near the focus point?
the waves are stronger and cause more damage
20 of 24
What is the epicentre?
The point on the earths surface straight above the focus
21 of 24
What is the richter scale?
Measurs how much energy is released by an earthquake called the magnitude, this is measured through a seisometer
22 of 24
what is the mercalli scale?
this measures the effect of the earthquake from a scale of 1-12
23 of 24
Name a rich and poor earthquake cast study and their dates?
Rich- Laquila, Italy 6th April 2009, Poor- Kashmir Pakistan 8th october 2005
