Administration - often county towns that employ large number of people as civil servants + are centres of local government example- Newbury in Berkshire.
Industrial - provide jobs for secondary industry. Located on coalfields with good access to railways & canals for transport e.g-Kidsgrove near Birmingham. Newer industry found on outskirts.
2 of 8
Strategic - used physical geography for defence, on top of hills e.g- Windsor castle, on the inside of a meander e.g-Warkworth in Northumberland, beside gap in range of hills e.g-Dorking in Surrey, island in river e.g- original site of Paris
Tourist resorts - Some in coastal locations e.g-Brighton, spa towns e.g-Bath (healing properties of waters), more recently national parks -Malham in Yorkshire dales nat park, major cities e.g-Rome + London (historic sites)
3 of 8
Changes in settlement function- Aberfan settlement South Wales. Agricultural village, during industrial revolution coal found so coal mines opened 1875 +became industrial settlement, 1989 coal mine closed, became residential.
Now commuter settlement - people living there working in nearby large towns/cities e.g- Merthyr Tydfil + also a retirement settlement as much larger number of elderly people.
4 of 8
Counter urbanisation - the movement out of cities to rural areas, in MICs due to: urban areas becoming less pleasant to live-crime pollution, traffic. Increase in cars allowed people to live further from their place of work.
Increase in the number of people working from home -better technology. Ageing population so move to countryside when they retire. Business parks on the edge of cities mean people dont have to commute.
5 of 8
Negative impacts of counter-urbanisation - conflict between locals and 'newcomers'. Many still work in urban areas - commuting causes pollution. House prices in rural areas may rise.
Many migrants may not support local businesses as shop where they work. Traditions of the village not valued by migrants so loss of community spirit. Villages become ghost towns during day when people at work.
6 of 8
Positive impacts of counter urbanisation on rural areas - local schools have increase in pupils so able to stay open. Some local services are supported such as pubs, local tradesmen etc.
Old derelict buildings are turned into habitable dwellings which adds to the aesthetic value and community well-being.
7 of 8
Depopulation of remote rural areas - there has been a movement out of remote rural areas e.g- highlands of Scotland. Meant people staying there see a decline in services.
In 2001 600,000 people living in 'remote rural areas' 45% didnt live within 4km of doctors surgery or a post office. Decline in local services also seen closure of local schools.
