How do bacteria increase diversity?
Mutation and Conjugation.
1 of 7
What is a mutation?
Changes in DNA that result in different characteristics.
2 of 7
What happens if the base sequence of a DNA molecule changes?
May result in a different sequence of amino acids being coded for, leading to a different polypeptide so a different protein.
3 of 7
What is conjugation?
When one bacterial cell transfers DNA to another bacterial cell.
4 of 7
What happens during conjugation?
Cell produces thin projection that meets another cell, forms conjugation tube->Donor cell replicates 1 of its plasmids->Circular shape made linear+passes along tube->only a portion is transferred->Recipient acquires new characteristics from donor.
5 of 7
What is horizontal gene transmission?
When DNA in the form of genes can be passed from one species to another species.
6 of 7
What is vertical gene transmission?
Where genes are passed down from one generation to another generation of the same species.
