What is genetic Engineering?
A gene from one organism is inserted into the DNA of another organism. The inserted gene then makes its protein in the genetically modified organism.
1 of 10
What is step 1 in Genetic Engineering?
A gene (e.g. for insulin) is cut out of a human chromosome using enzymes.
2 of 10
What is Step 2 in Genetic Engineering?
A DNA plasmid is taken out of a bacterium and cut open using enzymes.
3 of 10
What is Step 3 in Genetic Engineering?
The desired gene (e.g. human insulin gene) and the plasmid are mixed together.
4 of 10
What is Step 4 in Genetic Engineering?
The desired gene (e.g human insulin gene) and the plasmid are stuck together to make a new plasmid.
5 of 10
What is Step 5 in Genetic Engineering?
The new plasmid with the human insulin gene is put back into the bacterium. The bacterium has been genetically modified. The bacterium will now make the desired gene.(e.g human insulin gene)
6 of 10
What is an advantage of Genetic Engineering? (1)
Making human insulin using GM bacteria is quicker and cheaper than producing it any other way. So more people with diabetes can be treated.
7 of 10
What is an advantage of Genetic Engineering? (2)
'Golden Rice' is a GM plant that contains genes from other plants that increases the production of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene makes Vitamin A. It could prevent illness cause by lack of vitamin A in people who mainly eat rice.
8 of 10
What is a disadvantage of Genetic Engineering? (1)
A few diabetic people react badly to the insulin and need a different form.
9 of 10
What is a disadvantage of Genetic Engineering? (2)
Golden rice seed costs more that normal rice seed, so the poorest people can't afford to grow it.
