Genetic Modification

?
What is genetic engineering?
The cutting of a useful gene out of one organism and pasting it into another
1 of 14
What is a plasmid?
A loop of DNA
2 of 14
Bacteria that contain the gene for human insulin are...
...transgenic
3 of 14
What is Agrobacterium tumefaciens?
It is a pathogen that invades plant cells and inserts its genes into the plant's DNA
4 of 14
How do we make insulin?
When the human insulin gene can be stuck into bacteria so that they make insulin
5 of 14
Step number 1 for engineering bacteria to produce insulin...
...a plasmid is removed from a bacterium
6 of 14
Step number 2...
...the insulin gene is cut out of a human chromosome using a restriction enzyme.
7 of 14
Step number 3...
...the plasmid is cut open using the same restriction enzyme leaving the same sticky ends
8 of 14
Step number 4...
...the plasmid and the human insulin gene are mixed together
9 of 14
Step number 5...
...ligase (enzyme) is added. This joins the sticky ends together to produce recombinant DNA
10 of 14
Step number 6...
...the recombinant DNA is inserted into a bacterium
11 of 14
Step number 7...
...the modified bacterium is grown in a fermenter
12 of 14
What will I do now after you said all the steps correctly?
APPLAUD!!!!
13 of 14
What will I do if you didn't say all the steps correctly?
Tell you to go back and check it again!!!!
