Genes + the environment

?
What is a discontinuous variable?
The characteristics can be split into different categories
1 of 16
What is a continuous variable?
It is where a range of people can be any height within human range
2 of 16
What does Height show?
normal distribution
3 of 16
What is normal distribution?
when humans fall into numerous categories, the most common will be inbetween extremes
4 of 16
What is eye colour an example of?
polygenic inheritance
5 of 16
what does it involve?
many different alleles at many loci
6 of 16
What is height an example of?
Multifactoral
7 of 16
What does this mean?
Genes are involved but one or more environmental factors are involved
8 of 16
What is the genotype for siamese cat hair colour?
Gene codes for the enzyme tyrosinase which helps make dark fur
9 of 16
What is the environmental factor in siamese cat hair colour?
The enzyme only active when temperature drops below 31 degrees
10 of 16
what is the phenotype of the siamese cat hair colour?
There is distinctiveness colouration of siamese cat because only body extremities, such as ears, drop below 31 degrees whilst rest of body is kept above 31 degrees
11 of 16
What is the Genotype of lung cancer?
presence of proto-oncogenes involved in regulating the cell cycle
12 of 16
What is the environment factors that cause lung cancer?
Chemical components of cigarette smoke can alter these genes into oncogenes in lung cells
13 of 16
What is the resulting phenotype of lung cancer?
cell cycle may not be regulated by oncogenes in which case lung cells keep dividing without a check potentially leading to cancerous tumours in lungs
14 of 16
How can you test to see if the genotye affects the plants growth?
Using seeds from a mature plant, supply seeds with same environmental conditions and they are allowed to grow into plants
15 of 16
How can you test to see if the environment affects plant growth?
Use cloned plants, all environmental conditions must be controlled and allow plants to grow
