GCSE Physics Unit 1 Heat Radiation

Here are some flashcards for heat radiation, useful for GCSE AQA Physics Unit 1.

?
Which surfaces absorb more heat radiation?
Dark, matt surfaces
1 of 11
Which surfaces reflect more heat radiation?
Light, shiny surfaces
2 of 11
If a surface absorbs a lot of heat radiation, what can it also do?
Emit lots of heat radiation
3 of 11
What surface would be used to make something warmer and why?
A dark, matt surface because it absorbs more heat radiation.
4 of 11
What surface would be used to make something cooler and why?
A light, shiny surface because it reflects the heat radiation away.
5 of 11
What surface would be used to let heat out and why?
A dark, matt surface because it emits more heat radiation.
6 of 11
What surface would be used to keep heat in and why?
A light, shiny surface because it reflects the heat radiation inside.
7 of 11
Which experiments can be used to test which surface is better at emitting heat radiation?
Leslie's cube and the melting wax trick.
8 of 11
What is Leslie's cube?
Where hot water is surrounded by different surface types next to thermometers. The thermometer that heats up the most is next to the surface best at emitting heat radiation.
9 of 11
What is the melting wax trick?
The surfaces have a ball bearing attached to them using wax. One is a dark surface, the other is light. They are placed at equal distance from a Bunsen burner. The ball bearing that drops first is on the surface best at emitting heat radiation
10 of 11
What sort of questions might be asked relating to heat radiation?
Why something is painted black/silver or how you can reduce the amount of heat loss by something.
