GCSE Physics Unit 1 Heat Conduction

These flashcards on heat conduction are useful for GCSE AQA Physics Unit 1.

?
Where does heat conduction mainly occur?
In solids
1 of 7
What is the conduction of heat process?
Vibrating particles pass on their extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles.
2 of 7
What happens when the extra energy reaches the other side of the solid?
Those particles start vibrating and giving off their extra energy causing a rise in temperature, hence an increase of heat radiating from its surface.
3 of 7
Which material is the best conductor?
Metal
4 of 7
Why is metal the best conductor?
They have free electrons which means it is a faster way of transferring energy throughout the material.
5 of 7
Where is conduction more efficient, down a short fat rod or a long, thin rod?
Through a short, fat rod because it comes down to how far the electrons have to transfer the energy.
6 of 7
If a plastic bucket with a metal handle is left out in the sun, why does the metal handle feel hotter?
It conducts the heat into your hand much quicker than the plastic so although both parts of the bucket are the same temperature, the metal conducts it better. In cold weather, metals conducts heat away from your hand quicker, making it seem colder.
