Where does rain come from?
water evaporated from rivers/lakes/oceans etc and transpiration from plants that condenses to form clouds until the water droplets get too big
1 of 9
What substances dissolve in water?
most gases and ionic compounds but not covalent compounds
2 of 9
What is a saturated solution?
where as much solute as possible has been dissolved
3 of 9
How does the solubility change with an increase in temperature?
increases in a solid, decreases in a gas
4 of 9
What happens when we cool a saturated solution?
the solute will come out of the solution
5 of 9
What is hard water?
water that contains dissolved substances like calcium and magnesium salts
6 of 9
What is the difference between scale and scum
scum is when the calcium/magnesium ions in hard water react with soap, scale is when the calcium/magnesium salts decompose when the hard water is heated
7 of 9
Water can be softened by removing the salts that produce scale and scum. How?
adding washing soda or ion-exchange column
8 of 9
What is the difference between pure water and water that is fit to drink
pure water is distilled or de-ionised, while drinking water is filtered and has bacteria removed
9 of 9
