What is the contact process used to make?
Sulfuric acid
1 of 11
Describe the first stage
Sulfur is burnt in oxygen to make sulfur dioxide
2 of 11
Describe the second stage
The sulfur dioxide is oxidised to make sulfur trioxide
3 of 11
Describe the third stage
Sulfur trioxide is dissolved in sulfuric acid then diluted in water
4 of 11
What are the 3 conditions that affect the second stage?
Temperature, pressure and Catalyst
5 of 11
How does the temperature affect it?
Decreasing the temperature would increase the yield (equilibrium moved to the right) but the rate of reaction would be reduced
6 of 11
What temperature is used?
450 degrees
7 of 11
How does pressure affect the reaction
Increasing the pressure would move the equilibrium to the right but it is already to the right.
8 of 11
What pressure is used?
Because increasing the pressure is expensive, 1 atmosphere is used
9 of 11
How does a catalyst affect the reaction
It increases the rate of reaction
10 of 11
What type of catalyst is used?
A vanadium pentoxide catalyst
