Denaturation
The process in which the folding structure of a protein is altered, so it is biologically inactive.
1 of 22
Diffusion
The net movement of particles/molecules from an area of high to low concentration.
2 of 22
Eukaryotic Cell
Multicellular organisms. Cells consist of a nucleus surrounded by a membrane. The DNA is bound together by proteins in the chromosome. Also contain specialised organelles.
3 of 22
Gamete
A sex cell that contains the haploid set of chromosomes.
4 of 22
Immunity
The protection against infectious diseases.
5 of 22
Monomer
A molecule that can react chemically to another molecule of the same type to form a larger molecule.
6 of 22
Polymer
A compound made up of several repeating units.
7 of 22
Phospholipid
A lipid with one or more phosphate groups attached to it.
8 of 22
Exocytosis
A cellular process where cells eject waste products from the interior of the cells.
9 of 22
Vector
An organism that transmits an infective agent from one host to another.
10 of 22
Countercurrent System
When substances travel in opposite directions but adjacent and parallel to another.
11 of 22
Active Transport
The net movement of particles from an area of low to high concentration.
12 of 22
Osmosis
The net movement of water particles from an area of high to low concentration; across a partially permeable membrane.
13 of 22
Homeostasis
The tendancy of an organism or cell to regulate its internal conditions.
14 of 22
Haploid
A cell or organism having half of the number of chromosomes than a somatic cell.
15 of 22
Diploid
A cell or an organism consisting of 2 sets of chromosomes.
16 of 22
Prokaryotic Cell
Single-cellular organisms. Their DNA is free in the cytoplasm.
17 of 22
Substrate
The substance that is broken down by an enzyme.
18 of 22
Vasodilation
Blood vessels close to the skoin dilate/widen so more blood can flow near the skin. This increases heat loss as more heat can radiate to the surroundings.
19 of 22
Tissue Fluid
The fluid that bathes and surrounds the cells of multicellular organisms.
20 of 22
Hydolysis
The chemical breakdown of a compound due to a reaction with water.
21 of 22
Antigen
A toxin or other foreign substance which induces an immune response. A unique molecule on the surface of every pathogen.
