what are the 5 functions of protein in our body?
1) Needed for building and repair of body tissues 2) needed to make enzymes and hormones 3 ) Needed to make our immune system (white blood cells) 4) Essential for water balance, nutrient transport and muscle contractions 5) Used as an energy source
2 of 15
how many amino acids are found in the human body?
There are 20 amino acids inside the human body.
3 of 15
How are amino acids like building blocks?
1) They combine in different ways to make different proteins 2) Have different functions 3) Structural e.g collagen 4)Globular e.g enzymes/hormones
4 of 15
What are high biological foods?
They contain all the essential amino acids.
5 of 15
what are examples of high biological foods?
They're mostly found in dairy products e.g meats fish poultry, cheese and egg, yogurt, seafood and soya beans are also complete proteins
6 of 15
What are low biological foods?
These only contain some of the essential amino acids.
7 of 15
What are examples of low biological foods?
mostly found in plant foods e.g legumes, nuts, seeds, grains(wheat rice, oats, barely, corn) and vegetables.
8 of 15
How can a vegetarian or vegan get all the protein or amino acids they need?
1) Protein alternatives 2) Protein complementation
9 of 15
what can affect how much protein is needed each day?
Lifestyles, size, age, illness(need more protein when ill) and gender.
10 of 15
why do children not grow properly and to their full height if protein deficient?
This happens because the body can't grow to its full height without the right quality and quantity of 'materials'
11 of 15
Why may people lose their hair if protein deficient?
Hair is made of protein however people can live without hair so if there is a deficiency of protein, the body will use it for more important things.
12 of 15
Why may people with a protein deficiency have poor skin and nails?
Skin and nails contain protein so if there's a deficiency they will not be maintained so will become weakened.
13 of 15
Why may people easily develop infections if protein deficient?
Protein is needed for the immune system to protect us from infection and if we're deficient in protein our immune system will weaken and illness will take hold.
14 of 15
why may someone not be able to digest food properly due to protein deficiency?
A deficiency of protein causes changes in the digestive system which means various nutrients cannot be absorbed into the body.
