GCSE Pe unit 1.2.4 (The Muscular System)

?
What are the three types of muscle?
Voluntary (Biceps), Involuntary (Digestive System), Cardiac (Heart)
1 of 16
What are the smooth muscles?
(Involuntary) - These work without concious control. They are smooth as they have no stripes when under a microscope. Found in the digestive system (they aid blood vessels).
2 of 16
What are the skeletal muscles? (Tendon - Bone)
Used during exercise. Striped under a microscope. Voluntary muscles, used under concious control. They are attatched to our bones by tendons. Over 600 in the body - need to know 11.
3 of 16
What are the cardiac muscles?
This is the muscle that forms your heart. It works without concious control. It is the tireless worker. Each contraction of the muscle is a heart beat.
4 of 16
Extension
Increasing the angle at a joint.
5 of 16
Flexion
Decreasing of the angle at a joint.
6 of 16
Rotation
A circular movement (swimming).
7 of 16
Abduction
Taking a limb away from the midpoint of the body.
8 of 16
Adduction
Moving a limb towards the midpoint of the body.
9 of 16
Isotonic contractions
With movement - e.g. running
10 of 16
Isometric contractions
Your muscles contract without movement ( a rugby scrum or a handstand in gymnastics).
11 of 16
Immediate effect of exercise- Temperature
Rises in your muscles, therefore reduces the risk of injury (warming up) - Muscles require more energy to work therefore your CV and respiratory system adapt. More 02 is required and more C02 is given off.
12 of 16
Temperature (continued)
If you cannot meee the oxygen demand, your muscles will respire anaerobically and produce lactic acid. This causes them to feel tired - this is muscle fatigue.
13 of 16
Long term effects -
Muscular hypertrophy (micro - tears), increased muscular strength.
14 of 16
Long term effects -
Increased tolerance to lactic acid. Muscle fibers get stronger and thicker - muscular hypertrophy. This causes stronger contractions therefore muscle mass increases. Tolerance to lactic acid build up in your muscle also increases.
15 of 16
Injuries -
A strain (a pull) or tear (muscle rips or tears) - Reversibility would then take place. Rest, overnight your muscles repair, and allows for adaptations to take place. ( Protein allows muscles to repair)
