GCSE PE Unit 1.2.4 The Muscular System

?
The muscular system
Responsible for the movement of the human body, this happens because of the result of the muscles contracting and lengthening.
1 of 25
Involuntary Muscles
Work without conscious control e.g. the digestive system
2 of 25
Voluntary Muscles
Work and are controlled consciously e.g the muscles attached to the skeleton - triceps.
3 of 25
Antagonistic pairs
Muscles are arranged in antagonistic pairs so when one muscle contracts, the other relaxes - allows the joint to work e.g. Biceps and triceps, Hamstrings and quadriceps.
4 of 25
Deltoids ( Shoulder)
Abducts upper arm form the body - serve in tennis
5 of 25
Trapezius (neck)
Rotates the shoulder blade backwards - Rowing
6 of 25
Latissium dorsi ( Lower back)
Rotates upper arm at the shoulders - Swimming butterfly
7 of 25
Pectoral muscles ( Front of chest)
Adduction of the arm - front crawl
8 of 25
Abdominal muscles ( Stomach)
Flexion and rotation of the trunk - Rowing
9 of 25
Biceps (Front upper arm)
Flexion of the arm at elbow - Throwing a cricket ball when bent
10 of 25
Triceps ( Back of the upper arm)
Extension of the arm at the elbow - Straightening the arm when throwing a cricket ball
11 of 25
Gluteus maximus/ gluteals ( In your bum)
Extension of the upper leg - running and maintaining a good posture.
12 of 25
Quadriceps ( Front of the upper leg)
Extension of the leg at the knee - kicking a football
13 of 25
Hamstrings ( Back of the upper leg)
Flexion of the leg at the knee - sprinting when the leg bends
14 of 25
Gastrocnemius (Calves)
Plantar flexion of the foot - Running and pushing onto toes.
15 of 25
Isotonic
Muscle contraction that results in limb movement ( e.g. a push up - Biceps and triceps)
16 of 25
Isometric
Muscle contraction that results in increased tension but the length does not alter. ( Body stays in a fixed position - plank)
17 of 25
Immediate effects of exercise on your muscles -
Muscle fatigue, lactic acid build-up, Increased heart rate and muscle temperature.
18 of 25
Long term effects -
Muscular hypertrophy - increase muscle size, cause trauma, stronger and larger muscles.
19 of 25
Soft tissue injuries
Pulls, tears and strains
20 of 25
Rest -
Stop activity to prevent further injury.
21 of 25
Ice -
Apply an ice pack to reduce blood flow, pain and swelling
22 of 25
Compression -
Wrap a bandage tightly around the area to reduce internal bleeding and swelling
23 of 25
Elevation -
Raise the injury above heart level to reduce swelling and throbbing
24 of 25
Use of RICE
To lessen pain and to reduce recovery time
