What is social justice?
Ensuring that society treats people fairly, whether they are poor or wealthy and protects people's human rights.

What are human rights?
The basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled.

How do Christians promote social justice?
By following Jesus' teaching as in the parable of the sheep and the goat and by campaigning to improve the live sof the less fortunate members of society.

How do Muslims promote social justice?
By giving Zakah and becoming involved in social and community projects like working with the homeless/poor.

What is the Human Rights Act?
Passed in 1998 by the UK government and reinforces the UDHR.

Give examples of what is in the Human Rights Act:
Slavery, torture and forced labour are prohibited and includes the right to life, education, a fair trial, privacy, faily life and to get married.

What is the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights?
Based on the Qur'an, adopted in 1990 by the 57 states in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.

Give examples of what is in the CDHR:
No discrimination on the basis of race, language, belief, sex, religion or social status.

What is meant by the responisibilty of us as human beings? Give examples:
We have freedom of speech, but should not choose to cause offence to someone else and children have the right to be protected against cruelty and neglect but the reponsibility not to harm one another.

Give some religious beliefs regarding equality:
Being created in God's image makes everyone special, whatever their status, religion or gender they are all equally valuable and have the same relationship with God and people should be judged on their faith in God, not their wealth or status.

What are Christan views on homosexuality?
Some see it as sinful whilst others see it as morally acceptable, people who appose it think that sexual relations are for creating children and homosexual relations cannot do this,

What are Muslim views on homosexuality?
Many muslims see it as sinful and against Shari'ah law, whilst other Muslims accept it. In some countries, it is punishable by depth, whilst in others people are encouraged to repent rather than confess.

Which Muslim countries are debating on whetehr or not to allow same-sex marriage?
Lebanon and Turkey.

What is Freedom of religion?
The right to belive and practiseany religion one chooses.

What is freedom of religious expression?
The right to worship, preach or practise one's faith whatever way one chooses.

How does the UK protect religious freedom?
Laws forbid the persecution of members of any faith, but allows any person to encourage other people to follow their faith. Those found guilty of discriminating against members of particular religions can be punished by court.

What are Christian beliefs on religious freedom?
Christian teachings encourage tolerance and harmony and different Christian denominations fighting each other or against any other religions aren't following Paul's words in the New Testement.

What are Muslim beliefs on religious freedom?
Religious freedom is part of God's design and freedom of belief is taught in the Qur'an, Shari'ah law has provisions against people who convert from Islam to another faith, but these are only strongly enforced in a few countries.

Some Muslim countries have strict blasphemy laws. What does this mean?
These stop people from critisising the Qur'an, Muhammad, Jesus or any of the prophets.

What is racism?
Showing prejudice against someone because of their ethnic group or nationality.

What is positive discrimination?
Treating people more favourably because they have been discriminated in the past, this can help to ensure equality of oppertunity.

In the 1976 Race Relations Act.

What are Christian views on racism?
Opposes racism as it denies equal oppertunities due to the colour of people's skin or where they come from.

What did Martin Luther King Junior do?
He lead peaceful protests which helped to persuade the goverment that racist polivies were unfair and needed to be changed.

What are Muslim views on racism?
The Qur'an does not support the idea that dfferences in race or skin colour justify treating people unfairly, it also teaches equality and that differences in the way we look show God's creativity and variety.

How can positive discrimination help groups who have previously been dicriminated against? Give some examples:
Giving wheelchair users front row posit ons at concerts so they can see and ot risk being injured and some political parties may give more women the chance to be elected to Parliament as there have always been more male than female MPs.

What were old Christian beliefs on the roles of women?
The attitudes were very diffrent today, Paul wrote that just as Christ is head of man, man is head of woman but many people think his views were a reflection of the times he lived in and how different society was 2000 years ago.

Describe some Muslim beliefs on the roles of women:
Traditionally, men are the providers and women stay at home, women have the responsibilty to teach their children the basics of Islam. However; many women now have a paid job and men are also expected to take a roll in the home.

How is a women's role different from a man's role in Islam?
As motehrs, women do not have to attend mosque five times a day for prayers and if theyd o attend they worship seperately from men. Muslim women also cannot become imams unless no man is present at the worship.

What is a tithe?
The Old Testament said that Christians should pay this to thank God, it is 1/10 of your annual earnings or produce. This should then be shared among the poor. Some Christians today choose to pay a tithe to the church.

What does the New Testament say about wealth?
There are dangers associated with wealth like greed and selfishness, do not get so wrapped up in welath that you forget about loving God and everything on earth is only temporary but God is forever and so they place much more importance on God.

What are some Muslim views on wealth?
Wealth should be used to benefit everybody, it should not be used for ga,bling, fraud deception or for selling/producing alcohol, the value of money is only in the good it can do and hoarding excessive wealth is discouraged.

What is the reponsible use of wealth for Christians?
Those with excessive money should give it to the church, The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, The Parable of the Sheep and the Goat.

Those who help the poor are rewarded with a place in heaven.

The first duty of a husband is to provide for his wife and children, it s a duty to consider others and use any leftove money for them, Zakah (2.5% of earnings) and Sadaqah.

They have no labour rights such as fair pay, working conditions and working hours are ignored.

Does not oppose charging interest but does oppose the charging of excessive interest on loans.

Charging interest (usury) is against Shari'ah law as it can lead to injustice and exploitation of the poor.

Why does people trafficking happen?
Many people living in LEDCs want to move to more developed countries to have a better life, however they may be restricted due to immigration rules, many people are forced to pay a people traffick

What happens to people who have been involved in human trafficking when they arrive in another country?
They may be found work by a people trafficker with very low pay in unsafe conditions, often in 'sweatshop' factories or in the sex industry as prostitutes.

Why can victims of human trafficking not report the exploitation to the authorities?
As they are working and living illlegally.

What do Christian Aid and Islamic Relief do?
They immediately send their workers (many voluntary) to provide emergancy supplies like food, water, blankets basic shelter and medical supplies. The money to buy these supplies comes from charitable donations.

What is long term aid?
Assistance given to a poor community over a long period of time that has a lasting effect. An old saying which explains his is 'Give a man a fish and feed him for one day, teach a man to fish and feed him for life'.

What is the aim of long term aid?
To help people become less dependant on outside aid and become more self-reliant.

What is the fairtrade movemet?
Fairtrade products are guranteed to be grown and traded justly, workers are paid fairly aand work in good conditions, profits are used to further develop communities and reduces relianceon aid for LEDCs.

Why is fairtrade important to Christians and Muslims?
Due to stewardship (khalifah), it allows them to look after the earth and the people living on it on behalf of God.

How do people in Britain support those in need?
By helping in soup kitchens, food banks and finding charities to support the poor to find work.

How do Muslims help the poor in the community?
They use Zakah payments but the are also encouraged to work if possible so they do not have to rely on help from others.
