What is a CPU?
Central Processing Unit
1 of 25
The CPU has two main components: the ______ and the ______
Control Unit & Arithmatic Logic Unit(ALU)
2 of 25
What Is an 'Embeded' device?
A computer that forms part of a larger device.
3 of 25
What are the Four main components of a computer?
Main Memory, Input Devices, Output Devices, Secondary Storage.
4 of 25
Define Main Memory:
RAM or ROM.
5 of 25
Define an Input Device:
Somthing that inputs data into a system e.g. a keyboard.
6 of 25
Define an Output Device:
Somthing that outputs data from the computer e.g a monitor.
7 of 25
Define Secondary Storage:
Somthing that holds files e.g. a USB or Hard drive.

In the FDE cycle, what abbreviation does each letter hold?
F = Fetch, D=Decode, E=Execute
9 of 25
Define the roll of 'Fetch':
'F' takes memory and data from the main memory and ensures that the next instruction is carried out.
10 of 25
Define the roll of 'Decode':
'D' breaks down the instruction.
11 of 25
Define the roll of 'Execute':
'E' carries out the instruction.
12 of 25
What is the roll of the Arithmatic Logic Unit(ALU)?
The ALU is where calculations are performed inside the CPU.
13 of 25
There are Four types of Registers. What are they?
Program Counter, Memory Address Register, Memory Data Register, Accumulator.
14 of 25
Define the Memory Address Register(MAR):
Holds the memory of the current instruction and data that it requires.
15 of 25
Define the Memory Data Register(MDR):
Holds the actual instruction, and then the data that has been fetched from memory.
16 of 25
Define the Accumulator:
Holds the result of an intruction before it has been transferred to memory. Where Arithmatic and Logic Unit results are temporarily stored.
17 of 25
Define Program Counter(PC):
Holds the address of the next intruction to be excecuted.
18 of 25
In a computer, what does architecture refer to?
The particular components in certain computers.
19 of 25
The following are factors of the ______: located in the control unit, all instructions are stored in RAM, always begins at 0.
Program Centre(PC)

What is Virtual Memory?
Part of the Hard Drive specifically deisgned to hold data that is not in use by RAM. Virtual Memory is used as an extension to RAM when the computer does not have enough data to hold all running programs.
21 of 25
Define ROM:
Read Only Memory. Rom is a non-violate memory that contains the start up and operating system of a computer.
22 of 25
Define RAM:
Random Access Memory. RAM is a violate memory that contains the ability to run programs that the computer is currently working on. RAM requires power in order to function.
23 of 25
What is Cache Memory?
A type of memory that is only available for much higher prices and small sizes. It is used to bost the peformance speed of a computer.
24 of 25
What is Flash Memory?
A form of ROM which performs faster than a hard disk but slower than RAM. Often known as portable memory which is used in devices such as phones, cameras, and USB sticks.
