what is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for it to be able to function.
1 of 10
what does homeostasis control?
1. Blood glucose concentration
2. Body temperature
3. Water levels
2 of 10
what parts are involved in the control system?
receptors -> detect stimuli
effectors -> bring about responses which restore optimum levels.
coordination centres -> receive and process the information received from receptors
3 of 10
what is the human endocrine system responsible for?
the coordination and control of hormones in the human body.
4 of 10
what is the endocrine system is made up of?
- glands
- blood
- organs
5 of 10
what is the pituary gland in the brain?
which secretes several hormones into the blood in response to body conditions.
6 of 10
what is blood glucose levels controlled and monitored by?
pancreas
7 of 10
what does the pancreas produce?
Produces the hormone insulin when blood glucose is too high. Insulin allows glucose to move into the cells. Glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles.
8 of 10
(Higher) what else does the pancreas produce?
the hormone glucagon. When the blood sugar levels are too low, the pancreas produces glucagon. Glucagon allows glycogen to be converted back to glucose. The glucose is then released back into the blood stream.
9 of 10
Explain, using insulin as an example, what is meant by negative feedback?
- higher blood sugar level results in increased secretion of insulin
- effect of insulin is to lower blood sugar
which in turn reduces rate of insulin secretion
- overall result is to keep fluctuations in sugar level to a minimum
