What happens when photosynthesis is not occuring?
Oxygen diffuses into the leaf as it is being used by cells during respiration.

Why is diffusion fast?
No living cell is far from the external air, therefore a source of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Diffusion takes place in the gas phase.

What are the adaptations of leaves for rapid diffusion?
A thin flat shape that provides a large surface area and thin diffusion pathway. Many small pores (stomata) and numerous interconnecting air spaces that occur throughout the mesophyll(for efficient photosynthesis).

What do the guard cells do?
Surround the stomata, which open and close the pore, they can control the rate of gaseous exchange.

Why are the guard cells important?
Because terrestrial organisms lose water by evaporation.
