Gas Exchange

?
1:What is gas exchange?
A process of obtaining oxygen from the air and expelling carbon dioxide from the body
1 of 9
2:What organs allow gas exchange to take place?
The lungs
2 of 9
3:Name all of the components involved?
Nose, mouth, bronchi, lungs, diaphragm, trachea (wind pipe), intercostal muscles, ribs, alveoli (air sacs)
3 of 9
4:Explain the stages of inspiration
When you breathe in, the intercostal muscles between the ribs contract and pulls up the ribcage, at the same time the diaphragm contracts and air is drawn in
4 of 9
5: Explain the stages of inspiration
As it is inhaled, air is cleaned and warmed, in the nose, large particles are filtered out by hair and mucus. Tiny particles and bacteria are trapped by mucus lining the air tubes
5 of 9
6: What are cilia?
Tiny hairs which beat to move mucus up the thorat to be swallowed or coughed out
6 of 9
7: What can cigarette smoke do to cilia?
Destroys cilia so mucus accumulates in the lungs and the smoker must cough to remove it
7 of 9
8: How does clean air get into the blood stream?
Clean air passes through the bronchial tree whcih allows air to enter the air sacs called alveoli
8 of 9
9: What is the process which occurs in the aleveolus?
Air in → oxygen moves into blood through diffusion → carbon dioxide passes out
