Beleived chimpanzees could acquire human language- taught Sarah using coloured shapes to represent words- acquired 130 signs and could make a sentence up to 8 words- e.g. Sarah give apple Mary

Humans can only acquire language- "Language Acquisition Device" (LAD)- Animals couldn't as they have no LAD

1.) To find out if they could teach a chimp to communicate using human language (ASL) 2.) To teach a chimp ASL as they are already good at using there hands and so could cope well with the mechanics of signing
