Newton's First Law
A force is necessary to change the state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line of a body.
1 of 24
Newton's Second Law
The rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting upon it.
2 of 24
Newton's Third Law
When a force is exerted, another force is exerted that is equal, opposite in direction and of the same time.
3 of 24
Linear Momentum
The product of mass and velocity. Given the symbol: P
4 of 24
Net force
The net force on a body is equal to the rate of change of its momentum.
5 of 24
Impulse
The product of the force acting on a body and the time it is acting. AKA the change of momentum of a body equal to the area underneath a force-time graph.
6 of 24
Principle of Conservation of Momentum
In any direction, in the absence of external forces, the total momentum of a system remains constant.
7 of 24
Elastic Collision
One in which no momentum or kinetic energy is lost
8 of 24
Inelastic collision
Momentum is conserved, but kinetic energy is not.
9 of 24
Radian
The angle subtended at the centre of a circle by an arc of length equal to the circle's radius
10 of 24
Gravitational field strength
The force acting per unit mass at that point
11 of 24
The period
The time taken to complete one revolution.
12 of 24
Geostationary orbit
An orbit of the Earth made by a satellite that has the same time period as the rotation of the Earth and is in the equatorial plane.
13 of 24
Displacement
The displacement of a body undergoing s.h.m from the rest or equilibrium position.
14 of 24
Amplitude
The maximum displacement from the rest or equilibrium position.
15 of 24
Frequency
The number of oscillations per unit time
16 of 24
Phase difference
The difference by which one wave leads or lags behind an other.
17 of 24
Simple harmonic motion
When the acceleration of an object is proportional to its displacement and the acceleration is in the opposite direction to the displacement.
18 of 24
Pressure
Force per unit area (Pa)
19 of 24
Internal energy
The sum of the kinetic and potential energies of molecules within a substance
20 of 24
Specific heat capacity
The energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1K.
21 of 24
Latent heat of fusion
The energy required to change the state of 1kg of a substance at its melting point from solid to liquid.
22 of 24
Latent heat of vapourisation
The energy required to change the state of 1kg of a substance at its boiling point from liquid to gas.
23 of 24
Boyle's Law
The volume of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to pressure exerted on it, provided temperature remains constant.
