Criticises traditional marxism - theory is too general to explain crime and too idealistic to be useful in tackling crime (5) 4. Status Frustration - deviance amongst w/c boys. Not yet achieved status so they suffer frustration, they then reject society's values and turn to others. Subcultures offer the boys an alternative status heirarchy where they can achieve (5) 5. Property laws are cornerstone of capitalist society (9) 6. Strain Theory - American Dream (importance placed on success). Not everyone has equal chance which results in strain between cultural goal of success and lack of legit opportunities = pressure to resort to crime (6) Down 2. Crime is inevitable and rates are higher in modern society due to division of labour and diveristy. Boundary maintenance is when crime produces reaction from society and they unite against wrongdoer. Adaption and change - all change starts with crime (8) 3. Some laws have benefit to capitalism of helping to provide a fit and healthy workforce e.g. health and safety law (6) 7. Status Frustration - different subcultures react in different ways and develop due to unequal access to illegitimate opportunity structure. 3 types of subculture: criminal, conflict and retreatist.
