functionalists believed that society needed religion to ensure that society was controlled. if society was controlled there was little room for anyone to break the rules and change the way society was.

criticisms of functionalism

one criticism is that they fail to see the conflict that religion causes, such as the apartide movement and the holocaust. they also fail to see how religion is used to promote social change; like the Civil Rights Movement.
